CNN —A 2-year-old child died after a strong gust of wind sent the bounce house he was in airborne and into a neighboring lot in central Arizona, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said. The toddler, Bodhi Naaf, is the son of Phoenix firefighter Karl Naaf, according to the United Phoenix Firefighters Local 493 union. “This appears to have been a tragic accident,” Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lauren Reimer said in a statement. In its news release, the sheriff’s office did not say whether the bounce house in this case was staked and anchored. A 2022 study by the American Meteorological Society reported 132 wind-related bounce house incidents worldwide from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2021.

CNN —Part of a roadway on California’s Big Sur coast crumbled into the ocean over the weekend after part of a cliff gave way in what officials are calling a “slip out.”A portion of Highway 1 remained closed, according to a Sunday evening post from Caltrans District 5. All Big Sur state parks in the affected area are closed “until further notice,” according to a notice posted by California Department of Parks and Recreation. Essential travelers in the area will be led by convoy through the closed area, according to Caltrans District 5. The convoy will be in place for the “next several days” as crews work to fix and stabilize the roadway, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Park closures include Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Point Sur State Historic Park, according to a release from California State Parks.

The potential for damaging weather is ramping up Monday, with more than 50 million people at risk for severe storms from Texas to Virginia. CNN —A powerful winter storm is pummeling parts of the Central Plains with blizzard conditions and is set to drop a blanket of snow from Colorado to Minnesota through Tuesday, threatening widespread power outages and treacherous road conditions. Blizzard warnings extend from northern Colorado and Kansas into parts of Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota on Monday. As of Thursday night, two tornado reports had been made in Indiana and five in Ohio, according to the Storm Prediction Center. More than 10,000 homes and businesses in Indiana and nearly 37,000 in Ohio were without power late Thursday night, according to PowerOutage.us. In Winchester, Indiana, state police were helping with search and rescue efforts after a tornado likely struck the area, and temporary shelters have been set up for residents, agency spokesperson Sgt. State police Superintendent Doug Carter described the storm in Winchester as a “terrible, terrible event” with many reports of significant injuries. The tornado reports in Indiana and Ohio came as a system of strong thunderstorms swept across parts of the central and eastern US on Thursday.

CNN —Hurricane and tropical storm watches are now in effect for much of coastal New England as Hurricane Lee threatens to deliver a blow to parts of the region as well as Atlantic Canada later this week and into the weekend. “Hurricane conditions, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding are possible in portions of eastern Maine on Saturday,” the National Hurricane Center said. New York CNN —The US Energy Department has issued an emergency order aimed at keeping the lights on in Texas as the state’s power grid grapples with surging demand amid record-high temperatures. The order, issued Thursday night, could allow Texas power plants to surpass pollution limits through Friday night to meet “abnormally high” demand for electricity. Jennifer Granholm, US secretary of energy, determined in the order that “an emergency exists in Texas due to a shortage of electric energy, a shortage of facilities for the generation of electric energy and other causes.”As the heat wave continues to shatter records across the country, including in Texas, energy demand for things like air conditioning have frequently taxed the state’s delicate power grid with wind and solar energy helping to prop it up. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which oversees the electric grid serving 90% of the state’s customers, filed a request for the emergency order Wednesday. ERCOT warned that power outages could become necessary if demand isn’t lowered or additional supply can’t be added.

Idalia is expected to intensify into a hurricane Monday and make landfall on Wednesday morning near the Big Bend of Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. CNN —A severe weather system cutting through the South has left a trail of destruction in Louisiana, killing at least three people and injuring dozens of others as violent tornadoes touched down, collapsing homes, turning debris into projectiles and knocking out power. Multiple communities throughout Louisiana reported destruction, with roofs ripped off, homes splintered, debris littering roadways and cars flipper over. As ferocious winds downed power lines, more than 50,000 customers were left without power in across Louisiana and Mississippi Wednesday evening, according to PowerOutage.us. More than 40 tornadoes were reported in Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas over Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the Storm Prediction Center. More than 15 million people could see severe weather Thursday in parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas as the severe weather shifts the east, according to CNN Meteorologist Robert Shackelford.

CNN —The deadly storm system that destroyed homes in the South is heading east, threatening more tornadoes, freezing rain, treacherous travel and power outages. At least two people were killed in Louisiana as the system’s vicious winds tore through communities from Oklahoma to Texas to Mississippi. Now on the cold side of this massive, multifaceted storm, more than 35 million people from Utah, Idaho and Montana all the way to New England are under winter weather alerts Wednesday. And a half million people in at least four states are under blizzard warnings until Thursday morning.
